For an 18-foot (216-inch) stairwell, plan on 96 to 132 inches of total drop. The target is the fixture's lowest point sitting 8 to 10 feet above the lower floor, and never less than 7 feet above the highest stair tread. Subtract the fixture's own height from that, and the remaining figure is the rod or chain length you need to order.
The short version
- 18 ft ceiling = 216 in. Target clearance above the lower floor: 96–120 in.
- Total drop needed: roughly 96–132 in, minus the fixture's own height.
- Absolute minimum clearance above the highest tread: 84 in (7 ft).
- Longest adjustable drop we publish: Rounded Wood Pendant at 222 in.
- Where to find the maximum drop: on each product page, as a maximum hanging distance or chain length. If it is not listed, contact us and we'll confirm it before you order.
How do I calculate the drop for my own ceiling?
Three numbers, one subtraction. Take the ceiling height in inches. Subtract the clearance you want under the fixture, measured to the lower floor. Subtract the fixture's own height. What remains is the rod or chain length. For a 216-inch stairwell, a 96-inch clearance target, and a fixture 30 inches tall, you need about 90 inches of rod.
The number people get wrong is the fixture's own height, which is not the same as its width and is often listed separately. A tall lantern and a flat linear fixture of the same width need very different rod lengths in the same stairwell.
Where exactly should the fixture sit in a stairwell?
Two constraints bound the answer. The hard one is clearance: the lowest point must clear the highest stair tread by at least 7 feet so nobody walks into it. The soft one is composition: from the entry, the fixture reads best when its lowest point sits 8 to 10 feet above the lower floor, which usually places it near the second-floor line. If the stairwell has a tall window, centring the fixture on the window is a common approach and generally lands inside both constraints.
Which fixtures actually reach that far?
| Fixture | Published maximum drop | Works in an 18 ft stairwell? | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rounded Wood Pendant | 222 in adjustable | Yes, with margin | $640 |
| Lyla Pendant | 195 in maximum hanging | Yes | $2,880 |
| Neve Pendant | 166 in maximum hanging | Yes | $2,000 |
| Etoile Chandelier | 165 in adjustable | Yes | $2,320 |
| Everly Pendant | 146.5 in maximum hanging | Yes, at the shorter clearance target | $2,603.20 |
| Adria Pendant | 144 in maximum hanging | Only with a high clearance target | $1,360 |
All six exceed the 96–132 inch working range for an 18-foot ceiling. The reason to check anyway is that maximum drop is the one specification that cannot be worked around after delivery.
How we measured this
The drop figures above are published maximum hanging distances and chain lengths read from our own product pages. Where a product page does not list a maximum drop, contact us and we'll confirm it before you order. The clearance conventions (7 ft minimum over a tread, 8 to 10 ft above the lower floor) are standard interior practice rather than code requirements, and we have labelled them as such rather than presenting them as regulation.
Common mistakes
- Measuring to the landing instead of the lower floor. In a stairwell the governing distance is to the floor below.
- Forgetting the fixture's own height. A 30-inch-tall fixture eats 30 inches of your clearance.
- Assuming rods can be added. Shortening is routine; exceeding the published maximum is not.
- Ignoring the 7 ft tread clearance. The stair, not the floor, is where a head meets the fixture.
- Ordering before checking maximum drop. It is the one specification with no workaround after delivery.
Frequently asked questions
What drop length do I need for an 18 foot stairwell?
Between 96 and 132 inches of total drop for an 18-foot (216-inch) ceiling, depending on where you want the bottom of the fixture to sit. Aim for the fixture's lowest point to be 8 to 10 feet above the lower floor, then subtract the fixture's own height from the remaining distance.
How low should a stairwell chandelier hang?
Its lowest point should clear the highest stair tread by at least 7 feet, and 8 to 10 feet above the lower floor reads best from the entry. If there is a landing or a window, aligning the fixture's centre with the window is a common approach.
How do I calculate drop length from ceiling height?
Total drop equals ceiling height minus your target clearance above the lower floor, minus the fixture's own height. For a 216-inch ceiling with a 96-inch clearance target and a 30-inch-tall fixture, the rod or chain length needed is about 90 inches.
What if the fixture's maximum drop is shorter than I need?
Then it will not work in that stairwell, and no accessory fixes it safely. Check the published maximum hanging distance before ordering. Our longest is the Rounded Wood Pendant at 222 inches of adjustable drop; the Lyla Pendant reaches 195 inches.
Can I shorten a chandelier's drop after it arrives?
Usually yes. Rod-and-chain systems are supplied with removable sections, so shortening is routine. Lengthening beyond the published maximum is not, because it requires additional wiring and support that the fixture was not designed for.
Why do so few sites publish maximum drop length?
It only matters for tall spaces, so most catalogs omit it. The maximum hanging distance or chain length is the number you actually need when the ceiling is two stories up. Check it on each product page, or contact us and we'll confirm it before you order.
