How far does a wall sconce stick out from the wall?

A typical wall sconce comes about 5 inches off the wall. Beside a doorway or along a stair, aim for 4 inches or less, the ADA 307.2 limit for public corridors. Alabaster and marble designs sit closest to the wall.

A typical wall sconce comes about 5 inches off the wall; across our sconces that list the figure, the median is 5.1 inches. The closest to the wall are three alabaster designs at 1.97 inches, and the furthest is a copper-framed alabaster panel at 15.35 inches.

Why does projection matter in a hallway or stairwell?

A sconce is the one fixture people walk past at shoulder height. In a corridor, on a stair landing or beside a door, anything that reaches far off the plaster is a shoulder hazard, and a glass shade is a breakage risk. Projection, the distance from the wall surface to the front-most point of the fixture, decides whether a sconce belongs in a passage or on an open wall. On our product pages the width and height are always listed; check the product page for the distance from the wall, or contact us and we'll confirm it before you order. The sconce collection pages do not show it.

What is the 4 inch rule and where does it apply?

Section 307.2 of the ADA Standards limits objects mounted between 27 and 80 inches above the floor to a projection of 4 inches into a circulation path. The rule is written for public and commercial buildings, and a private house is not bound by it, but 4 inches is a workable target for any sconce beside a doorway or along a stair. Among our sconces that list the figure, most stay at or under 6 inches, and the closest sit under 2 inches.

Which sconces stay within 4 inches?

Twelve of the twenty-one fixtures inside 4 inches are alabaster or marble, where the stone sits almost flat against the backplate. The other nine are brass, nickel, glass and crystal sconces with a shallow arm. Three wall lamps publish 1.97 inches, printed on the page as both 1.97 inches and 50 mm: the Alabaster Column wall light, the Elliptical alabaster wall lamp and the Orbison sculptural alabaster wall lamp. The Spain alabaster sconce publishes 2.17 inches, a solid brass bathroom light 2.7 inches and the Ozeki alabaster panel 2.76 inches. A handcrafted solid brass wall lamp lands on exactly 4 inches.

Which sconces project the most, and where do they belong?

The furthest reach is 15.35 inches, printed as 390 mm, on the rectangular alabaster wall lamp with a copper frame in the table above. Behind it come a solid brass pulley sconce at 13.25 inches, a double-layer round alabaster wall lamp at 10.63 inches, a brass picture light at 10.5 inches, a black globe glass sconce at 10.43 inches, a bronze vanity and picture light at 9.57 inches, the industrial milk-white glass sconce at 9 inches and a blue floral glass sconce at 8.7 inches. If a brass sconce will be handled often, our brass finish guide covers which finishes mark under fingerprints.

How we measured this

On 2026-09-17 we read the distance from the wall printed on our sconce and wall lamp product pages, under the labels Distance from Wall, Wall Distance, Projection, Depth from Wall in its several forms, and Depth/Extension. Clearance from Wall, which two pages print alongside a depth, is a different measurement and was left out, as were flush mounts and ceiling lamps that also print a wall distance. Millimeter values were converted to inches, and where a listing covers several sizes we counted the smallest. Prices are the first variant price on the same date.

What gets overlooked when reading a sconce listing?

Width is not projection. A wide sconce that hugs the wall is a smaller obstacle in a hallway than a narrow one standing off the plaster. Backplate size matters separately, because it has to cover the wall box opening and sit flat. 58 of our listings print a backplate dimension under that label, with a median of 4.75 inches and the smallest at 2.75 inches on the Elton sconce. The largest reads 34.3 inches, on a vintage wood and metal candle sconce whose page prints the same figure for overall height, so confirm that one with us. A swing arm publishes one wall distance, so ask which position it describes; the Convessi prints 6.9 inches for both of its sizes. Projection says nothing about load: our sconce weight guide covers what a wall box holds, and the room lighting guide covers how to compare a fixture against your own room measurements.

Frequently asked questions

How far can a sconce project in a hallway?

ADA Standards section 307.2 limits objects mounted between 27 and 80 inches above the floor to a 4 inch projection into a circulation path. That rule governs public and commercial buildings; in a private home it is a target rather than a requirement. Several of our sconces stay at 4 inches or under, including three wall lamps at 1.97 inches.

Is distance from wall the same as depth?

On our pages, yes. Distance from Wall, Wall Distance, Projection, Depth from Wall and Depth/Extension all mean the measurement from the wall surface to the front-most point of the fixture. Clearance from Wall is a different figure and we did not mix it in.

Which sconces sit closest to the wall?

The three alabaster wall lamps at 1.97 inches, then the Spain alabaster sconce at 2.17 inches, a solid brass bathroom light at 2.7 inches, the Ozeki at 2.76 inches and a hand-carved alabaster lamp at 2.99 inches. Most of the shallowest fixtures are slab and column designs with the stone almost flat against the plate.

Why do picture lights and swing arms project so much?

They are built to reach out over artwork or a bed. The two picture lights that publish this number are at 9.57 and 10.5 inches, one of which doubles as a vanity light, and the Convessi swing arm is at 6.9 inches. They belong above a headboard or a frame.

Where do I find how far a sconce sticks out?

On its product page, listed as distance from the wall or projection. If it is not listed and projection matters in your space, contact us and we'll confirm it before you order.
