How much does a wall sconce weigh, and will a standard wall box hold it?

Most glass and brass wall sconces weigh 6 lb or less. A luminaire wall box carries 50 lb unless marked lower; a plaster ring or unmarked box is limited to 6 lb under NEC 314.27(A)(1).

Most of our wall sconces with a listed weight are 6 pounds or under; the median is 4.6 lb, and the heaviest is 33 lb. A wall outlet box carries 50 lb unless its interior marking says less. The 6 lb figure in NEC 314.27(A)(1) applies to a plaster ring or a box not designed for luminaire support.

What weight can a wall outlet box support?

There are two figures, and which applies depends on what is already in the wall. A box used at a luminaire outlet in a wall carries 23 kg (50 lb) unless its interior is marked with a lower maximum, so the marking inside the box is the first thing to read. NEC 314.27(A)(1) then allows a wall luminaire of not more than 3 kg (6 lb) to hang on another box, or on a plaster ring secured to one, provided the fixture or its supporting yoke is fastened with no fewer than two No. 6 screws. That 6 lb figure is the one people quote, and it is the ceiling for a plaster ring or a box never designed to hold a luminaire. Ceiling outlets fall under a different rule, 314.27(A)(2), which our ceiling light weight guide covers.

On a marked luminaire outlet box, weight is almost never the constraint on our catalog. On a plaster ring or anything unmarked, 6 lb is the line, and the heavier sconces in the table below cross it.

How heavy are glass and brass sconces in practice?

Lighter than most people expect. Among the wall fixtures in our sconce collection that list a weight, most are 6 lb or under and the median is 4.6 lb. The lightest is a black flush-mount sconce with a clear glass globe at 1.21 lb. The Ardmore satin brass sconce publishes 3.3 lb and the two-arm Arno double sconce 5 lb. For an alabaster sconce, contact us and we'll confirm it before you order; for reference, our alabaster ceiling flush mount lists 42.7 lb and a linear alabaster chandelier 33.44 lb, neither wall-mounted. The square clear-glass vanity sconce lands on exactly 6 lb, at the plaster-ring allowance with no margin.

Which sconces are over 6 pounds?

Eight of the sconces that list a weight. Four sit between 6.1 and 8.8 lb, and four are well past the allowance: a Tur brass and crystal sconce at 11 lb, the grand glass globe wall sconce at 12 lb, the Devaux square sconce at 17 lb, and the linear smoke glass globe wall sconce at 33 lb, the heaviest wall fixture we publish. The table runs from the lightest to the heaviest with current prices.

What should I check before mounting a heavy sconce?

First, the box and its marking. If there is no marking, or the fixture hangs on a plaster ring, treat 6 lb as the limit and plan on fitting a box made for luminaire support. Locate the stud before ordering: a 33 lb linear fixture landing between studs needs a fixture bar. Second, the backplate. It has to cover the box opening and sit flat, and the published backplate width tells you whether it hides a standard opening. Third, the projection. A heavy fixture that also reaches far off the wall puts more leverage on the top screws, and our sconce projection guide lists which sconces stay close.

How we measured this

On 2026-09-17 we read the weights printed on our sconce and wall lamp product pages and converted kilogram values to pounds. Where a listing covers two sizes we counted the lighter one. Prices are the first variant price on the same date.

What do people get wrong about sconce weight?

The first mistake is treating 6 lb as the limit for every wall box. It is the allowance for a plaster ring or a box not made for luminaire support; a marked luminaire outlet box carries what its marking says, up to 50 lb. The second is assuming a small fixture is a light one: the 12 lb grand glass globe sconce is a single glass globe and weighs more than twice the two-arm Arno double sconce at 5 lb. The third is treating a listing with no weight as light. If a product page does not list a weight, contact us and we'll confirm it before you choose a box. The room lighting guide covers how to compare a fixture against your own room measurements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weight limit for a sconce on a wall box?

A box used at a luminaire outlet in a wall carries 23 kg (50 lb) unless its interior is marked with a lower figure, so read the marking. NEC 314.27(A)(1) separately allows a wall luminaire of not more than 3 kg (6 lb) on another box or a plaster ring, fastened with no fewer than two No. 6 screws.

Are most of your sconces under 6 pounds?

Most of those with a listed weight are. Four sit between 6.1 and 8.8 lb, and four are heavier: 11, 12, 17 and 33 lb.

Is alabaster heavy for a sconce?

Contact us and we'll confirm it before you order. For reference, our ceiling and linear alabaster pieces run heavy: the 24 inch Alto alabaster flush mount lists 42.7 lb, and the Austen linear alabaster chandelier 33.44 lb.

Does a heavier sconce need a stud?

It needs a box rated for the load, fastened to framing or to a listed bracket. If the existing fixture hangs on a plaster ring, anything over 6 lb means fitting a proper luminaire outlet box or a fixture bar between studs.

What if a sconce does not list a weight?

Check the weight listed on each product page, or contact us and we'll confirm it before you order. For anything with a large glass or stone shade, confirm the weight before choosing a box.
